Spring Practice Position Preview - Safeties

Wake Forest's safeties are a hardy group that will need to replace both starters from the 2018 season. The Deacons lost two-year starter Cameron Glenn and senior Chuck Wade. Glenn was Wake Forest's second-leading tackler last year with a team-high 68 solo stops and 98 tackles on the season. Glenn played the best football of his career last fall, recording five consecutive double-figure tackle games including a season-best 13 stops against Louisville.
Wade, converted to safety last year after three seasons at wide receiver, was fifth on the team with 63 tackles including a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown against Rice.
Among those looking to fill their shoes, Luke Masterson will be among the top candidates. The versatile rising redshirt junior was pressed into duty at both safety and linebacker last fall. After missing the first three games of the season after suffering an injury in preseason camp, Masterson made his debut against Notre Dame. He wound up starting six games at linebacker and finished the season with 52 tackles. His ability to play both positions will serve him well this fall.
Nasir Greer will be another candidate for a starting role at safety this fall. Greer had a strong freshman campaign in 2018, making 41 tackles and proving himself as a hard-hitter. He had a season-best seven tackles against Clemson and added a 20-yard pick-six in the regular season finale against Duke.
Traveon Redd returned to action in 2018 after missing the 2017 season with an injury. A redshirt junior this fall, Redd was a key member of Wake Forest's special teams and had 18 tackles on the season.
Keegan Good, a Pinehurt, NC native who will enter his redshirt junior season in the fall, made good use of his playing time last fall and recorded a pair of tackles in the 59-7 win over Duke.
Justin Bartee, a redshirt junior, will continue to provide depth this fall. Peyton Woulard and Zion Keith each saw action in four or fewer games last fall and maintained their redshirt status but have been slowed by injuries this spring.
A pair of incoming freshmen will look to gain action this fall. Trey Rucker was a first team all-state selection at Flint Hill School in Virginia last fall and helped the Huskies to consecutive 11-0 seasons and the 2018 Virginia Division I state championship. A.J. Williams, from Bamberg, SC, was a three-year starter who was a dual threat quarterback as well has a safety. Williams played in a pair of postseason all-star games following his senior season which included three interceptions in one game in a win over Hannah-Pamplico.
