Tony Jones wins high jump for first collegiate victory
RALEIGH, N.C. – Freshman Zach Facioni stole the show with a record-breaking performance at the Raleigh Relays on Friday night. The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams rose to the occasion alongside national competition.
Leading the way for the Deacs, Facioni set a new school record in the men's outdoor 5k. His time of 13:48.16 trumps David Crowe's record time of 13:51.90 set all the way back in 1981.
In the field, fellow freshman Anthony Jones won his first collegiate title, outdueling his opponents in the men's high jump with a height of 2.08m. Kane Aldrich took third in the men's pole vault, battling down the stretch and clearing a height of 4.82m.
On the women's side, Hannah Brookover (University of Florida transfer), climbed the Wake Forest all-time outdoor rankings with a second-best time of 10:23.63 in the women's 3k steeplechase. Teammate Elise Wright, in her steeplechase debut, broke into the top-five all-time as well with the fifth best mark of 10:36.05.
Senior Mimi Smith showed that the Deacs weren't slowing down as it got later in the evening. She looked strong in her 2019 outdoor debut, setting an impressive personal best of 34:14.04 in the women's 10k event.
Up next, the Demon Deacons return to the Paul Derr Track and Field Complex, tomorrow for the second and final day of the Raleigh Relays. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. with section two of the men's 10k. Live coverage will be provided by ACC Network Extra starting at 1:20 p.m.
