WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest track and field team will compete for the final time prior to the ACC Outdoor Championships when the Demon Deacons make the trip to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Wednesday. The single-day meet begins at 11:30am with the women's discus throw. Events on the track commence at 1:45pm with the women's shuttle hurdles.
The Deacs will send 21 student-athletes to compete. Seven on the men's side and 14 for the women will suit up for Wake Forest at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.
LAST TIME OUT | Freshman Tony Jones captured the Deacs lone event crown at the Virginia Challenge on April 21. His victory in the men's high jump marked his second title in his last three appearances for Wake Forest. Rachel Kern and freshman Lily Harding-Delooze earned top-five finishes in their respective events. Kern, competing in the women's javelin, finished fourth with a new career-high of 46.69m. With the new personal-best, she breaks into the top-40 in the east region at 36th-place. Harding-Delooze ran in the women's 800m and sneaked into the top-five with a fifth-place finish. Her time was fourth among ACC competitors.
Sam Halvorsen snagged a fifth-place finish in the women's 5k invite with a new personal-best of 16:06.17. Her mark on Saturday was just over 14 seconds better than her time at the 2018 Virginia Challenge in the 5k where she crossed the line in 10th-place. Her new career-best is good for the fourth fastest outdoor mark in Wake Forest history. Also on the track, Elise Wright continued to impress in the women's 3k steeplechase. The freshman's time of 10:25.03 is the third-best mark in Wake Forest history right behind teammate Hannah Brookover. Wright won her heat at the Virginia Challenge and finished eighth-overall (fourth among ACC competitors).
DEACS IN THE RANKINGS | On the men's side, Freshman Zach Facioni paces Wake Forest with his ACC-best 5k time of 13:48.16. He sits 25th in the nation in the event and ninth in the NCAA east region qualifier rankings. Dakota Greenwalt (11), Archie Wallis (12) and Kenton Bachmann (18) all sit inside the top-20 of the 800m rankings in the ACC. In the field, Tony Jones, winner in two of his last three appearances in the men's high jump, ranks t-seventh in the event at 2.08m and has his eyes on a podium finish at the conference championships. Kane Aldrich ranks seventh in the pole vault in the ACC and Elijah Shalaway is building momentum with a seventh-place conference status as the regular season comes to a close.
For the women, Brookover ranks fourth in the ACC with a 10:23.63 time in the 3000m steeplechase. She sits 21st in the NCAA east region rankings and 25th in the nation. Wright holds the sixth-best ACC mark in the 3k steeple at 10:25.03 and ranks 28th in the east region. Queens (Charlotte) transfer, Danielle Konopelski has impressed this season in the javelin. The graduate student-athlete ranks fifth in the ACC at 47.77m and 30th in the east region heading into the weekend. Sophomore Rachel Kern follows in the seventh spot in the conference with a mark of 46.69m. Senior leader Mimi Smith looks to cap off her Deacon career in grand fashion. The Illinois native currently ranks seventh in the ACC in the 10k with a time of 34:14.04. Heading into the Twilight Qualifier, Smith's best time is good for 19th in the east region. Halvorsen ranks fifth in the ACC in the women's 5k, 17th in the east region and 39th in the nation. Elsewhere in the field, senior Tesia Kempski destroyed her previous personal best in the pole vault. Her new best height of 4.12m is good for seventh in the ACC, 17th in the east region and 45th in the nation.
LOOKING AHEAD | The Demon Deacons will receive an off-weekend due to final exams. They'll prepare for the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set for May 9-11 in Charlottesville, Va. Following the conference meet, the Deacs will send a select number of student-athletes to compete alongside national opponents at the NCAA East Region Preliminary round in Jacksonville, Fla. The 2019 outdoor season will wrap up at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
