WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's athletics teams recorded strong scores in the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rate report, which was released by the NCAA on May 8.
The Academic Progress Rate (APR) tracks classroom performance of Division I sports teams, and it considers eligibility and retention of student-athletes over a four-year period. It measures eligibility, graduation and retention and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport.
Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and programs also can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on annual scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
Nationally, the overall four-year Academic Progress Rate concluding with the 2017-18 academic year held steady at 983.
Field hockey, men's golf and women's tennis recorded perfect APR scores of 1,000. Those three sports, along with football (989), were honored with the NCAA Public Recognition Awards for the 2017-18 academic year earlier this month.
In all, 11 programs earned a score above a 990, marking an improvement from last year as eight teams scored a 990 or higher. 16 teams scored at or higher than the national average of 983.
Wake Forest field hockey is the only ACC field hockey program with a perfect 1000 score, topping last year's rate of 996. Men's tennis jumped 11 points, up to 990 from 979 last year. Women's soccer improved to 993 after posting a score of 987 last year.
Football checked in at 989, well above the average football rate of 964 and is tied for third in the ACC behind Clemson (992) and Duke (992). Baseball sits three points above the national baseball average with a 979 and women's basketball earned a 995 rate, well above the 982 NCAA average.
