JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest men's golf team saw its season come to an end Tuesday morning with a 3-2 loss to Stanford in the match play quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons got victories from Cameron Young and Alex Fitzpatrick, but the Cardinal won the other three matches to advance to the semifinals.

"I don't think we played our best today but I am proud of these guys," said head coach Jerry Haas. "It is a heartbreaking way to have your season end. In match play, anything can happen and the difference between moving on or being eliminated is really small. We have played well all year long and today we just didn't have the breaks go our way. We battled hard for 72 holes over the last four days to put ourselves in this position and I feel bad for these guys because I know how hard they worked. We will learn from this experience and be better for the next time."

Early in the match, momentum shifted back and forth with Stanford holding an early lead in four matches, followed by the Deacs holding a lead in four matches midway through the match. As the holes dwindled, each team led in one match, with the other three matches tied.

Young put the first point on the board for the Demon Deacons, posting a 5&4 victory over Daulet Tuleubayev. Stanford answered as Brandon Wu completed a 4&3 win over Eric Bae to tie the match at 1-1.

In the first match on the course, Fitzpatrick was tied with Henry Shimp with four holes to play. After the players halved the next three holes, Fitzpatrick won the last hole to secure a 1UP victory and give the Deacs a 2-1 lead. The Cardinal drew even when Isaiah Salinda rallied for a 3&1 victory over Eugenio Chacarra.

With the match tied 2-2, it came down to the last match on the course. Stanford's David Snyder had taken a 2UP lead with six holes to play before Lee Detmer won the next two holes to get the match all square. After Snyder retook the lead, Detmer again drew even with a birdie on No. 8 to square the match as it went to the final hole. As both players missed the green in regulation at No. 9, Snyder was able to get up-and-down for par to win the hole and the match.

"I want to thank Cameron and Lee for all they have done for our program over the last four years," said Haas. "They have been great leaders and players and we will certainly miss them. I am disappointed that their Wake Forest careers came to an end today, but they were a big reason why we got this far."

The match was the Demon Deacons' debut in match play at the NCAA Championships. Since 2009, the team national title has been decided in a match play tournament with the top eight teams from the stroke play competition.
