Women's Soccer Continues French Tour

PARIS -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team continued its training tour of France over the weekend. On Friday, the Demon Deacons played Olympique Marseille's U19 team at the OM campus near Cassis, France, posting a 3-2 win.
Wake went up 1-0 in the 20th minute when Ryanne Brown crossed to Shayla Smart and Estelle Laurier scored. Olympique Marseille tied the match in the 23rdminute and the teams went to halftime tied at 1-1. In the second half, Hayley Younginer put the Deacons up 2-1 with a goal in the 60th minute before OM tied the match in the 68th minute. Wake Forest notched the game-winner in the 72nd minute when Lauren Tangney passed to Shayla Smart for the goal in the 72ndminute for a 3-2 win.
While in Marseille, the team had a chance to tour the port city in the south of France that has served as a crossroads of immigration and trade since its founding by the Greeks in 600 B.C.
Following the match, the team traveled to Lyon, the third-largest city of France. It is located in the country's east-central part at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône. Lyon is known for its cuisine and gastronomy.
On Saturday, the Deacons saw their second FIFA Women's World Cup match at Stade des Alpes in Grenoble, which was the home of the 1968 Winter Olympics. Canada shutout New Zealand 2-0 in Group E action.
Following a morning training session, the team went to the home of junior Estelle Laurier, a native of Chaponnay, France, for a dinner.
On Monday, the team headed off to Paris via the train where they will visit the Montmartre area and visit the Sacre-Coeur Basilica before ascending the Eiffel Tower on Monday night.
