Young and old, rookies and veterans, new football fans and lifelong fans, nearly 250 women gathered Wednesday night at BB&T Field to experience the 22nd annual Wake Forest Women's Football Camp.
Led by head coach Dave Clawson and his coaching staff, the campers were broken into teams, taken through film study, experienced Opening the Gate and running down the hill behind the Demon Deacon and his motorcycle, engaged in practice drills, and concluded the night by running a select number of plays from the Wake Forest playbook.
The largest crowd to attend the event in at least a dozen years, many of the campers were motivated by Wake Forest's recent success on the field and streak of three consecutive bowl wins.
Rookies, like Sharron Vogler, made their first visit to the camp with a group of friends, all of whom work in the Wake Forest School of Business.
"I've been solicited many times but it hadn't worked out," said Vogler. "This is my first time. My peers at work rallied us all together so I had no excuse. It was time to sign-up."
Amanda Burton, who works in the Family Medicine department at Wake Forest Baptist Health, brought one of her employees and her employee's mom.
"I expect to run some plays and meet some football players and, hopefully, meet the coaches," said Burton before the start of the event. A lifelong football, Burton's allegiance runs deep with the Demon Deacons.
"I'm A Fan," she quipped, grabbing onto Wake Forest's marketing mantra this summer.
While learning the difference between a slant and a post, a bubble route and a wheel route, the campers were unanimous in their enjoyment of the event.
"It's a blast," said Sue Hatem who was making her third trip to the camp. "I learn more about football every time I come. Tonight I learned how not to fall when I shuffle between the tackling dummies."
Sporting eye black and authentic Wake Forest jerseys, the campers learned the basics of the Wake Forest offense and defense before hitting the field behind the Demon Deacon. After a team photo, the coaching staff took the campers through a dynamic warm-up period followed by a series of tackling and blocking drills. The night concluded with each team running their specific playbook which they learned during the evening.
"This is an opportunity for our fans to have a night out and have some fun and learn some football," said Clawson. "A lot of them come out as groups and it develops camaraderie and some fellowship around Wake Forest football.
"We take them through a lot of the same drills that our players go through. We teach them fundamental football skills and some terminology and maybe if this encourages them to come to a game, hopefully we turn them into Wake Forest football fans. It's a fun night for everybody."
Wake Forest opens the 2019 season on August 30 at BB&T Field as the Demon Deacons host Utah State on Opening Night. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Wake Forest Ticket Office at (336) 758-3322, ext. 1 or by clicking HERE
