Kyle Holcomb netted the game-winner in the final five minutes.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 4 Wake Forest opened up the 2019 preseason with a 2-1 exhibition victory over Furman on the road on Sunday night.
Kyle Holcomb netted the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, tapping in a rebound off a Calvin Harris shot to break a 1-1 tie.
"It was a good test for the group tonight against a good Furman side," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "With it being the fourth day of the preseason and training pretty hard this morning, I was proud of the way guys implemented some of the things we worked on this week."
After a scoreless first half, the Demon Deacons got on the board first in the 58th minute when Michael DeShields headed in an Omar Hernandez corner kick.
Furman evened the score at 1-1 with a Cole McLagan goal in the 64th minute on a free kick from just outside the box.
Twenty-two different Deacons saw game action, with nobody playing more than 70 minutes.
Cole McNally started in net and held the Paladins off the board in the first half with one save, while Andrew Pannenberg played the second half.
The Deacs held a 13-3 advantage in shots and 7-2 margin in corner kicks.
"To find a way to win with tired legs and getting all of our rostered guys on the field for good minutes will prove to be valuable moving forward," Muuss added. "Winning was nice because we believe winning is a habit, but more importantly we got out of the match healthy."
Wake Forest has one more exhibition game, playing host to Army West Point on Saturday at 8 p.m.
