WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's marching band—The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black—and Winston-Salem State University's Red Sea of Sound will perform together in a landmark halftime show at Wake Forest's Opening Night football game against Utah State on Friday, August 30 at BB&T Field.
This combined performance marks the first time the two bands have performed in concert with each other in the history of the two schools. During the halftime extravaganza, the Red Sea of Sound will take the field first and later will be joined by the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black for a joint performance. The halftime entertainment will conclude with a performance by the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black.
"This will be a historic moment as the Red Sea of Sound and the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black come together on Opening Night at BB&T Field," said Wake Forest Director of Athletics John Currie. "The spirit of collaboration between Dr. Tim Heath, our brand new Director of Athletic Bands, and Winston-Salem State's Dr. Michael Magruder has led us to this partnership. Dr. Hatch and Chancellor Elwood Robinson are close friends who have long worked together to better serve Winston-Salem and we are excited to welcome all of our friends and neighbors to Opening Night."
In addition, as part of the Wake Forest Fan Ambassador Program 1,000 tickets have been purchased for the Opening Night to be provided free of charge to Winston-Salem State University students, faculty and staff.
"It is exciting to bring both the Red Sea of Sound and The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black together for what promises to be a historic and fun-filled event," said Wake Forest Director of Athletic Bands Dr. Tim Heath. "I believe bringing both bands together will provide a great opportunity for fellowship and collaborative music-making. We hope this event will further unite the city of Winston-Salem through the spirit of music."
"We're thrilled to be invited to perform during Wake Forest's home opener," Winston-Salem State University Director of Bands Dr. Michael Magruder said. "Deacon fans better get ready because when the Red Sea takes the field, they can expect to be entertained."
The Spirit of the Old Gold and Black is the oldest college marching band in North Carolina and has performed at Wake Forest's last three bowl victories including the 2016 Military Bowl in Annapolis, the 2017 Belk Bowl in Charlotte and the 2018 Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.
The Red Sea of Sound marching band has received countless awards and numerous recognitions for outstanding performances. The band has performed in the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, the Cleveland Classic and the New York City Urban League Classic. At the August 30 performance, Wake Forest will recognize the Red Sea of Sound for being named the 2018 No. 1 preseason Historically Black College and University Division II band by ESPN and for being a finalist for the 2019 Historically Black College and University award for Best Marching Band.
