Fitzpatrick Named to Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup Team

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest sophomore Alex Fitzpatrick will compete for Great Britain and Ireland next month at the 2019 Walker Cup, to be held Sept. 7-8 at Royal Liverpool. The bi-annual competition, which began in 1922, features a team of 10 top amateur players from the United States against a team of 10 top amateur players from Great Britain and Ireland.
Fitzpatrick is the third Demon Deacon to compete for Great Britain and Ireland, joining Eoghan O'Connell in 1989 and Paul McBride in 2017. Wake Forest has also had 18 players compete on the American team at the Walker Cup.
The United States leads the competition 36-9-1 after winning 19-7 two years ago at the Los Angeles Country Club. That edition featured Deacs on opposite sides as Will Zalatoris was a member of the victorious American team, while McBride competed for GB&I.
"The Walker Cup is the pinnacle of the amateur game and is an honor to be selected to compete in it," said Fitzpatrick. "I was able to finish last year strong and I am delighted that I earned a selection. I am excited to hopefully get that trophy back for GB&I. The chance to compete at Royal Liverpool is incredible and the course will be in great condition. Hopefully the rough will be up and the wind will blow and that will be to our advantage."
Wake Forest has had a player compete in 24 of the 47 editions of the Walker Cup, led by Jay Sigel, who was a nine-time participant from 1977 to 1993. In 1987, the American squad had four Demon Deacons, as Billy Andrade, Chris Kite, Len Mattiace and Sigel led the United States to victory at Sunningdale Golf Club.
Fitzpatrick is the third Demon Deacon to compete for Great Britain and Ireland, joining Eoghan O'Connell in 1989 and Paul McBride in 2017. Wake Forest has also had 18 players compete on the American team at the Walker Cup.
