CONCORD, N.C. -- The Wake Forest cross country teams opened their season Friday (Aug. 30) at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.

The Deacs placed third in the women's race with Furman winning both both the men's and women's races and UNC Charlotte taking second.  Both races were of 5K meters and were held at Frank Liske Park.

For the men, Wake Forest did not field a full team, just individuals.  John LePino would have finished sixth with a time of 15:26.1.

"I thought John LePino ran solidly today," said head coach John Hayes.  "Most of our other runners were making their college debut.  Meredith Helton also had a solid performance and Rylee Kopchak ran well for her first competition."

For the women, Helton, a sophomore, and Kopchak, a freshman, stood out for the Deacs. Helton finished eighth with a time of 18:43.1 while Kopchak finished eleventh with a time of 19:10.8.
The Deacs will return to action on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
