Wake Forest 49, Elon 7 – September 21, 2019
Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson
On the victory:
"This was a good win. I thought we were tested early, and I think we responded well. In the second half, we came out and handled our business. It was good to get some backups in, and empty the bench and play guys who have worked hard in our program for the past two, three, four, even five years. We made big plays on offense, Scotty Washington and Sage Surratt continue to play well. I think Jamie Newman also played well, other than the miscue that led to a pick in the endzone. Depth is still a concern for us, and I think we made some foolish penalties. We played some freshmen for the first time today but it's time for them to grow up and be able to contribute more, without the tradeoff of penalties."
On the Defensive Performance:
"If you take away their one touchdown drive, I think we played as well as you can. Elon has a good and accurate quarterback, and they were down some starters. I thought their offensive game plan was good. I think at a certain point we started to overwhelm them a little bit. I get more nervous and have more anxiety over these non-conference games than I do ACC matchups, because it's harder to get into the minds of your players. I don't think we started as fast as we did in the first three games. We were tested and picked it up once we started responding better."
On Kenneth Walker:
"Kenneth is really good with his hands on the ball. He has to continue to grow and develop as a player when his hands aren't on the ball. He makes cuts, makes people miss, and he has good vision. He did fumble, but was able to recover it. Kenneth is a good football player. He's getting better overall within our offense."
On Sage Surratt and Scotty Washington:
"Having these two sizeable receivers playing at once is intentional. At those positions within our offense, we try to recruit bigger guys. We want to win size matchups, and I think both players have developed into some of the best receivers in the ACC."
Wake Forest redshirt freshman defensive lineman Ja'Corey Johns
On refocusing in the second half:
"At halftime we had to gather ourselves, come together to make sure we come out hard, stronger in the second half of the game."
On playing an FCS opponent:
"We just take it one game at a time. We focus on the next game, practicing all week and looking forward to this game right here."
On his emergence on the defensive line:
"I have worked on my focus level. As I'm getting older now I'm starting to play harder, focusing on the game, doing my job as well. It's all coming together for me."
Wake Forest redshirt junior quarterback Jamie Newman
On throwing to Scotty Washington and Sage Surratt:
"It's fun throwing it to those guys. it's also fun seeing all the work you put in and being able to display that on Saturday. They definitely make it easy, not only being big bodies but the way they use them. They have excellent body control in the air, hand-eye coordination and it's unbelievable. You know those guys both work on those things so it's great to see."
On the team's approach as they conclude the non-conference schedule:
"Every week, as you've seen last week, anybody can be beat, so we got to treat every game the same. Every week is a one week season for us, so only looking ahead to the week ahead. It was just great to come out and handle business like we were supposed to and it was great to a lot of those young guys get in and get some time."
Wake Forest redshirt sophomore wide receiver Sage Surratt
On how he and Scotty Washington complement each other:
"Having multiple guys to make plays makes it hard [for a defensive player] to favor one side or the other so I think we complement each other well."
On Jamie Newman:
"He does a good job of spreading the ball out, making the right reads, which he has worked really hard in the offseason to do. The fact that he is tough to bring down gives us more time to get open."
Wake Forest redshirt senior wide receiver Scotty Washington
On the takeaways from today's game:
"We just got to keep the confidence that we are playing with. Every day in practice, we treat it like a game. I feel like it's definitely translating on Saturdays."
On playing with Sage Surratt:
"It's a ton of fun playing alongside Sage. If one person has a good game, it's on the other person to have a good game the next week. We have a competition going between us seeing who can get the most yards"
Elon Head Coach Tony Trisciani
Opening Statement:
"We lost to a real good ACC football team today. I know what kind of football team we have and this was not our best football today, but that's a real good football team. I know what we got in that locker room so we're going to go back, grade the film and coach them up just like we do every week. It's a one week at a time operation and we'll have a better football team next week. We played a good amount of guys here today and we had a lot of guys that went down too. It's hot, we got worn down a little bit physically and they ran a lot of plays, but we got some guys with valuable experience and we can always coach off this film and get another one. They've got some good receivers. One of the best passing offenses in the ACC, well the best right now. We wanted to swing here. We wanted to swing the bat and give them everything we had and we did."
On what he saw from his team:
"What I saw from our guys is I saw them line up against a very good ACC football team. We fought and we swung the bat and gave them our very best. We didn't hold up in some situational football and opportunities at the end of the first half. We didn't sustain enough drives to really compete with them. It's like every week. It's one at a time, you got to go back and grade the film and get back to work."
On Wake's touchdown at the end of the half and if it took away momentum that his team had:
"Yeah. That was a killer. I thought we hung in there. We got a couple of stops in the second quarter, we got a takeaway, moved the sticks a little bit, so from a situational football standpoint we can't let that happen."
