Deacons in Fifth After First Round of Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Sunday at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational. The Demon Deacons shot 5-under during the first round at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club to stand in fifth place after 18 holes.
The tournament features an elite field that includes six of the eight NCAA match play quarterfinalists from last season. Oklahoma is the first round leader at 14-under, followed by Oklahoma State at 8-under. Texas and Clemson are tied for third at 6-under, one shot ahead of the Deacs at 5-under.
"It was a very cold day on the course," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The guys played very well, but just didn't score particularly well. We hung in there and it was a good effort from the whole group."
Eric Bae shot the low round of the day for the Demon Deacons, carding a 3-under 68 to finish the day T-8th on the individual leaderboard. Eugenio Chacarra had a 2-under 69, while Alex Fitzpatrick and Parker Gillam each shot even par 71. Marco Steyn rounded out the lineup with a first round 73.
