Elise Wright took first place and led the Wake Forest women's cross country team to the team championship at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday.  Wright toured the 4K course in 13:51.2 and finished five seconds in front of second place Sarah Edwards of Virginia Tech.

Freshman Madeline Rehm placed sixth overall in 13:57.90, Meredith Helton was seventh in 14:09.1 and Isabelle Dutranoit was ninth in 14:11.2.  Wake Forest had a composite score of 30 and finished ahead of second place Virginia Tech (31).

On the men's side, Wake Forest was fourth of seven teams.  Sophomore Brent Bailey led the Demon Deacons with a third place finish, clocking 18:44.6 over the 6K course.  Tommy Johnston was second on the Deacon squad in 19:54.2, followed by Kenton Bachmann (20:27.4), Michael Disalvo (20:48.0) and Archie Wallis (20:57.0).

"Right now, we have a very young men's team and we are bringing them along slowly," said head coach John Hayes.  "Our women have a bit more experience and I was extremely pleased with how we ran. In both cases, we are using the early part of the season to continue training and learning.  Our goal is to have both teams reach their peak performance when it really counts, for the ACC Championship and in the NCAA Championship meets."

The womens' team will head to Boston on Friday, Sept. 20 to participate in the Coast to Coast Beantown race.  The men will next run at the Panarama Farms Initational in Charlottesville, Va. On Sept. 27.
