Kaitlyn Parks made nine saves in her first-career start, and Shayla Smart scored a late game-winner.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Behind clutch defending and a late goal, Wake Forest knocked off No. 14 Notre Dame, 1-0, at Alumni Stadium on Thursday night.

Making her first-career start, Kaitlyn Parks made nine saves to earn the shutout and keep the Fighting Irish (3-2-0, 3-2-0 ACC) off the board.

Shayla Smart came through with the game-winning goal in the 87th minute, ricocheting a close-range shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for the Demon Deacons (2-4-1, 2-3-1 ACC). Reese Kim earned an assist on the play

"It was an incredible team performance tonight, and our first complete performance of the season" head coach Tony da Luz said. "Ball movement, defending, fighting — we really excelled in all areas. KP was excellent in the goal to keep us in the game. I'm proud of our young team tonight."

The Deacs had several big chances earlier in the game. Giovanna DeMarco had back-to-back close-range shots stopped in the first half. Wake earned a penalty in the 30th minute, but Faith Adams' shot deflected off the left post. She put away her own rebound, but the goal was waved off as nobody else touched it first.

Parks, making just her second career appearance and first start, was a wall in between the posts. She stopped all nine shots on goal she faced, including six in the second half.

Wake Forest is off until Oct. 29, when the Deacs host Virginia Tech for the pink game on RSN. Wake is raising money for Wake Forest Baptist Health to treat breast cancer, with jerseys being auctioned off HERE.
