The redshirt senior is one of just 30 student-athletes nationally to be named a candidate for the prestigious award.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Wake Forest redshirt senior Carlos "Boogie" Basham Jr. was named as a Senior CLASS Award Candidate.
Basham is one of 30 football student-athletes nationally to be named as a candidate. Wake Forest is one of just four Atlantic Coast Conference teams to have a candidate on the list.
"The Senior CLASS Award is extremely prestigious, and for Boogie Basham to be recognized as one of the Top 30 candidates in the country shows how dedicated he is on and off the field," head coach Dave Clawson said. "His maturation over his career and the leadership role he has taken within our program this fall has been special to watch."
Off the field, Basham exemplifies the "Pro Humanitate" mission of the University and is giving to the Winston-Salem community.
One such example of this is helping the incoming first-year students and their families with the move-in process. Boogie has also been a big part of this during his time here as well as other on-campus events like Pump Up for Piccolo, a philanthropic effort to raise money for cancer research and awareness for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund.
On the field, the Roanoke, Va. native has become one of the toughest players to stop in the country. Before it came to an end against Syracuse, Basham had a streak of 23-straight games with a tackle for loss, which was the only double-digit streak in the country. Additionally, Basham has a sack in 13 of his last 16 games including one in the first five games this season.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To determine the overall Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates are narrowed to ten finalists at the end of the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system available to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs: community, classroom, character and competition. Along with the winner, the ten finalists will be awarded Senior CLASS Award first- or second-team honors.
