Track Team Sends Split Squads to Iowa State, Liberty
2/13/2020 6:39:00 PM | Track and Field
Wake Forest will split its men's and women's indoor track teams between two different meets this weekend. The Deacons will send a number of middle distance and distance runners to the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa while a larger contingent will head to Lynchburg, Va. and the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational at Liberty University.
Competition at both sites begins on Friday with Iowa State getting underway at noon (1 p.m. EST) and at 3 p.m. at Liberty.
Record Breakers:
Wake Forest set two indoor records in the last week. On Saturday, Feb. 8, Zach Facioni broke the school record in the indoor mile by turning in a 4:01.60 at the Camel City Elite meet at JDL Fast Track. On Tuesday, Anna Bush set a new mark in the pentathlon, scoring 4,023 points in winning the event at the Queens University Multi-Events at JDL Fast Track. Bush's point total is the highest in the ACC this season.
Quoting head coach John Hayes
"We have gotten off to our strongest start to a track season in many years at Wake Forest. The key now is to maintain and use momentum to build on our start. We are seeing so many positive signs from our athletes. Our presence on the national list in several events is evidence that we are off to a strong start and continuing to improve. We have five individuals ranked in the top 36 in the NCAA. I am very optimistic that we will continue to improve as we head towards the ACC Championship in South Bend on Feb. 28-29."
Iowa State Classic:
Among the Demon Deacons competing at Iowa State this weekend, Aleeya Hutchins will compete in the 800m where she has the ACC's fifth-best time this year at 2:07.84. Isabelle Dutranoit will compete in the 3,000m, along with Hannah Brookover and Elise Wright. Dutranoit, a native of Bermuda, set that country's national record with 9:50.80 in the 3,000m at the Camel City Invitational on Feb. 7. Amy Harding-Delooze will compete in the mile after winning that event last weekend at Camel City with a 4:45.83. She has the seventh-fastest ACC clocking this year. She will be joined in the mile by Wright, Brookover and Johanna Schulz.
On the men's side, Archie Wallis will compete in the 800m along with Kenton Bachmann. Wallis has the fourth-fastest 800 time in the ACC this season and the 17th-ranked mark nationally. Bachman has the ACC's sixth-best 800 time this year. Zach Facioni will run the mile, a week after setting the school record last Saturday at the Camel City Elite. Facioni has turned in the ACC's second-fastest mile this year and the 10th-best time in the ACC. Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos will run the 5,000m along with Theo Kahler and Carter Coughlin while Michael Moerk and Brent Bailey are both entered in the mile.
