Five years ago today the Demon Deacon great made history becoming the first player drafted into the WNBA

Five years ago today Dearica Hamby made history, becoming the first Demon Deacon ever selected in the WNBA Draft when she was taken with the No. 6 pick by the San Antonio Stars.

The two-time first team All-ACC selection was one of 12 players invited to draft held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. She is now entering her sixth season with the franchise that relocated to Las Vegas ahead of the 2018 season.



Hamby is coming off her best season to date, winning the WNBA's Sixth Woman of the Year. She averaged a career-best 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds, helping the Aces reach the semifinals of the WNBA Playoffs.

In addition to playing for Las Vegas, Hamby also plays for Ragusa in Italy. In 2019, Hamby helped lead the team to the Italian Cup title while she earned Eurobasket.com All-Italian A1 Player of the Year.

The Wake Forest great ended her Demon Deacon career as the program's all-time leading scorer (1,801 points) and rebounder (1,021 rebounds). She earned All-America honorable mention honors from both the WBCA and Associated Press this season. Hamby was also a Wade Trophy Finalist and a WBCA All-Region selection.

In her final two seasons in Winston-Salem, she averaged a double-double while scoring better than 20 points per game.
