GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Redshirt senior defensive lineman Carlos "Boogie" Basham Jr. and junior kicker Nick Sciba were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, as announced by the league on Friday morning.
In addition to being named a preseason all-conference selection, Basham received a vote for the conference player of the year. He was one of just six players to receive a vote for the ACC Player of the Year.
This marks the second time in the last three years Wake Forest has had multiple players on the preseason team. Offensive lineman Phil Haynes and wide receiver Greg Dortch both were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team in 2018. Dortch represented the Deacs in the all-purpose slot.
Basham Up
Along with being named as an all-league selection and candidate for player of the year, Basham is also up for a number of national awards this season. During the summer, he was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award watch lists.
The Roanoke, Virginia native had an explosive 2019 campaign that saw him finish with a spot on the All-ACC first team. Basham posted 11.0 sacks, the second-most ever in program history. He also recorded 18.0 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles, both which ranked second in the ACC.
Basham comes into the season with 18 consecutive games with a tackle for loss, the longest streak in the country. He is the only player in the country to have a streak longer than 12 games.
Kick Sciba
Last season en route to setting an NCAA record with 34 consecutive field goals made, Sciba put himself in the conversation as one of the best legs in the country. He was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Trophy and is on the watch list for the award again heading into the 2020 season.
Sciba enters his junior campaign with plenty of national acclaim, earning preseason All-America honors from five separate publications including first team honors from Lindy's Sports.
He is looking to stamp his place as the best kicker not only in Wake Forest history but in the history of the ACC. He currently ranks second in conference history with a .915 career field goal percentage and his 1.65 career field goals per game rank fourth in ACC history.
