Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Voice of the Deacs for over 20 years, Stan Cotten, has been named the North Carolina Sports Broadcaster of the Year, by the National Sports Media Association.

The National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame has also announced a class of seven for 2020.

The seven who will be inducted June 26-28 in Winston-Salem are broadcasters Bill King, Jim Nantz and Dick Stockton and writers Larry Merchant, William Nack, William C. Rhoden and Rick Telander.

In addition, NSMA members voted Mike "Doc" Emrick as the 2020 national sportscaster of the year and Nicole Auerbach as the national sportswriter of the year.

The association also names a broadcaster and writer of the year for each state. Ed Hardin, formerly of the News & Record in Greensboro and the Winston-Salem Journal, has been named the sportswriter of the year for North Carolina for a fifth time and for the third time in a row. Cotten has earned the state's broadcast honor for the fifth time.

Cotten also earned the Lindsey Nelson Award in November 2019, which is given annually to an outstanding broadcaster who has helped advance the game of college football. Along with his play-by-play duties, Cotten is the host of both the "Dave Clawson Show" and the "Steve Forbes Show" each week of the respective football and basketball seasons and also hosts the Wake Forest Deacon Podcast 'Lunch with Stan' on the Wake Forest athletics website GoDeacs.com.

Cotten came to Winston-Salem in the fall of 1996 after spending four years in Huntington, West Virginia, as the radio play-by-play 'Voice of the Thundering Herd" at Marshall University. Prior to his stint at Marshall, Cotten spent twelve years in his home state of Tennessee working in both radio and television.
