The Demon Deacons finish the season with a record of 16-6-0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team (16-6) was beaten by the No. 9-ranked Michigan Wolverines (17-3-3) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Demon Deacons began the game on the offensive, recording five corners through the first five minutes of play. However, The Deacs could not find a breakthrough. In the 15th minute, the Wolverines opened the scoring when a shot from Michigan ricocheted off the post then off a Wake Forest defender.
Wake Forest almost had the equalizer in the 36th minute through Sofia Rossi but her long range effort sailed just a fraction over the crossbar. The Deacs entered the halftime break trailing for just the fourth time this season. Wake Forest outshot Michigan through the first 45 minutes of action 5-3.
Just three minutes into the second half, Sophie Faircloth's corner caused chaos in the Michigan penalty box. The scramble in the box forced a Michigan defender into a goalline save, keeping the Wolverines advantage. In the 53rd minute, Hulda Arnarsdottir nearly gave the Deacs their first goal of the night but her shot skewed just outside of the post.
In the 66th minute, Meredith Haakenson doubled Michigan's advantage from the penalty spot.
Arnosdottir had another opportunity to put Wake Forest on the board after she shrugged off a Michigan defender. The senior's shot was saved by Hilary Beal in the Michigan goal. Wake Forest continued to pressure the Michigan backline.
In the 76th minute Shayla Smart's shot struck the post of the Michigan goal. The ball bounced back into play and fell for Sophia Rossi but Rossi's follow up effort flew over.
The Deacs finish the season with a record of 16-6 highlighted by wins against then-No. 2 Duke, then-No. 17 Virginia Tech, and in-state rivals NC State. Wake Forest earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the 21st time in program history.
Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"Unfortunately, we gave up the early goal which is a big setback in NCAA games. I thought we worked our way into the game in the last 15 minutes of the first half. We got the game back and created good chances before halftime. The second half we played well and created chances but it wasn't our night. I feel terrible for the seniors because it was a really good performance and fantastic year. We held a high expectation throughout the year and now we have to build on it for next year."
"The entire roster top to bottom has done an incredible job this year on focusing and working regardless of their minutes or roles. They have been unconditional in their efforts all year long and that has made us a better team overall. I'm really proud of the group."
