PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Wake Forest redshirt freshman offensive lineman DeVonte Gordon was placed on the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Tuesday afternoon.
The award, which is in its fourth year of existence, is presented to the outstanding freshman player in college football.
Gordon is in his first season as a starter at right tackle, earning the spot in fall camp. He has played a key role in the Demon Deacons having one of the most explosive offenses in the country.
The Beef Boys have been the best in the conference in sacks allowed this season, leading all 14 ACC schools with just 1.56 sacks allowed per game. Additionally, the mark ranks 32nd in the nation.
That protection has allowed the Demon Deacons to have one of the best offenses in FBS and one of the highest-scoring attacks in ACC history:
After scoring 55 points against North Carolina, Wake Forest remains the only team in the nation that has scored at least 35 points in every game this season.
-
vs. Old Dominion (42)
-
vs. Norfolk State (41)
-
vs. Florida State (35)
-
at Virginia (37)
-
vs. Louisville (37)
-
at Syracuse (40)
-
at Army (70)
-
vs. Duke (45)
-
at North Carolina (55)
Wake Forest has scored 402 combined points this season, which is on pace to break the single season record from 2017 when Wake Forest tallied 459 points.
The Demon Deacons are currently averaging 44.7 points per game, which would be another school-record setting season. Only one other team in the history of the ACC has scored more points on average, the 2013 National Champion Florida State Seminoles (51.6 points per game).
Additionally, the 2013 national championship Seminole team is the only team in the ACC to have a longer streak of consecutive 35-point scoring games. Wake Forest's streak currently stands at nine games just four off the conference record.
