Wake Forest defensive coordinator and safeties coach has accepted a coaching position on Duke's football staff.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After five seasons at Wake Forest University, defensive coordinator and safeties coach Lyle Hemphill has accepted a position on Duke's football coaching staff.
"I would like to thank Lyle, his wife Christen and their entire family for their hard work and dedication to our football program and Wake Forest University over the last five years," head coach Dave Clawson said. "He worked tirelessly to help our young men develop on and off the field as he developed great relationships with all our players.
"During this transition, our staff will collectively fill his role as Wake Forest's defensive coordinator as we prepare for a talented Texas A&M team in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on New Year's Eve."
Coach Clawson will begin a comprehensive national search for the Demon Deacons next defensive coordinator immediately.
Coach Hemphill just finished his fifth season on the Wake Forest football staff. Hemphill, who worked primarily with safeties his first two seasons on campus, added defensive coordinator duties at Wake Forest during the 2018 season.
Before moving to Winston-Salem, Hemphill spent six seasons at Stony Brook including the last four as the defensive coordinator. Before moving into a coordinator role, he helped lead Delaware to the 2010 FCS Championship Game.
His coaching career started at Delaware Valley University in 2002 coaching defensive backs and special teams before moving on to Delaware as a graduate assistant in 2004.
He and his wife, Christen, have four children, Izabella, Lyla, Georgia and Olivia.
