ACC Announces Updated Basketball COVID-19 Game Rescheduling Policy

12/22/2021 12:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball

This announcement signifies that today’s originally scheduled men’s basketball game between Wake Forest and Boston College may be rescheduled.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In a unanimous decision of the league's athletics directors, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its updated 2021-22 COVID-19 Game Rescheduling Policy which takes into account the recent rise in COVID cases. This policy applies to both men's and women's basketball and will be retroactively applied to previously forfeited basketball games, including today's originally scheduled Wake Forest - Boston College men's contest.

With that, Wake Forest is working collaboratively with the Atlantic Coast Conference and Boston College on a potential new date for the two teams to play in Winston-Salem. If a replacement date cannot be found the game's result will be a "no-contest."

"As I mentioned earlier this week, we will continue to work collaboratively with our colleagues to make the best possible decisions for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans," director of athletics John Currie said. "These updated policies take a step towards ensuring competition for our student-athletes while doing so in the most healthy and safe manner. I am grateful for Commissioner Jim Phillips and my ACC AD colleagues for their collaboration and partnership in these efforts. We all look forward to the next time Coach Forbes, Coach Hoover and our Demon Deacon basketball squads are back and playing in front of Deacon Nation."

2021-22 Updated ACC Men's and Women's Basketball COVID-19 Game Rescheduling Policy:

  1. Minimum threshold of players and coaches (seven and one, respectively).

  2. If a team does not have the requisite number of participants and elects not to play, the game shall be a no contest.

  3. If a team has the requisite number and elects not to participate, it's a forfeit.

There are still no minimum participant thresholds for Olympic sports at this time. The ACC will revert back to its normal reschedule policy and will make every effort to make up contests. If teams are unable to make up a contest, it will be classified as a no contest.

The Deacs' next scheduled men's game is Wednesday, Dec. 29 at Louisville and the next women's contest is set for Thursday, Dec. 30 against Florida State inside LJVM Coliseum at 7 p.m.

Finally, the ACC's Medical Advisory Group continues to monitor and discuss the current circumstances and, if necessary, may make adjustments to the current protocols.
