Three From Wake Forest Earn All-South Region Honors

Kyle Holcomb was named a United Soccer Coaches first-team All-South Region selection while Nico Benalcazar and Omar Hernandez were selected as third-team honorees.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Wake Forest men's soccer senior Kyle Holcomb was named a United Soccer Coaches first-team All-South Region selection while juniors Nico Benalacazar and Omar Hernandez were selected to the third-team, the organization announced on Tuesday.
With their selections, the Demon Deacons have had 25 all-region selections under head coach Bobby Muuss including 15 on the first-team.
Kyle Holcomb
During a senior season in which he started all 20 of his appearances and was named a First-Team All-ACC selection, Holcomb collected team-highs in points (28), goals (12) and game-winning goals (three).
His 12 goals were the most by a Demon Deacon since Omir Fernandez also scored 12 during the 2018 season.
Additionally, his four assists on the campaign were the most in a single season in his four years at Wake Forest.
Holcomb completed his collegiate career ranking in the top-10 in program history for both goals (33) and points (74).
Nico Benalcazar
Serving as a team captain and the anchor of the Wake Forest backline once again, the Wilton, Conn., native appeared in 20 matches with 19 starts.
The Demon Deacons earned seven clean sheets with Benalcazar in the lineup and in Wake Forest's ACC Tournament quarterfinals match against Duke, he scored his first goal of the season off a 45th-minute header.
Benalcazar also had three assists on the season.
Omar Hernandez
A mainstay in the midfield and one of four Demon Deacons to earn All-ACC honors, Hernandez started all 18 of his appearances in 2021 and collected 15 points on five goals and three assists.
Hernandez finished tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (three) with Holcomb as Wake Forest was also 6-0-1 when he registered a point on the season.
