Former Demon Deacon Alex Sharp Named to Australian World Cup Team

The 2020 Wake Forest graduate will compete for her home country at the World Cup in September 2022.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Former Wake Forest women's basketball player Alex Sharp is set to compete at the 2022 World Cup squad for her home country of Australia.

The Demon Deacon forward was one of 24 players named to the initial squad. The 2022 World Cup is set to start September 22 with Australia hosting the tournament.

Sharp was a key member of the Australia 2021 FIBA Women's Asia Cup third place team that lost to eventual champions, Japan, in the semifinals. She averaged 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game including a 11-point and 10-rebound double-double in the opening game of the tournament against Chinese Taipei.

During her four seasons in Winston-Salem, Sharp became one of the best rebounders in program history. She finished third in program history with 921 rebounds, becoming just the fourth player in program history to tally more than 900 rebounds. She also became the 28th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point barrier, ending her career with 1,149 career points.

Sharp also ranks fifth in program history with 19 career double-double performances as well as fifth in Wake Forest history in minutes played with 3,725 minutes in 97 career starts.

Australia will play in Belgrade at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments and face Brazil, Korea and Serbia starting in February.
