2/10/2021 10:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Ian DuBose scored a team-high 17 points in his return to action.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.  – Wake Forest defeated Boston College 69-65 Wednesday evening for their first road win of the season and the Deacs' first win at Conte Forum since 2017.

The Deacs (6-8, 3-8) led the entire second half and staved off a late comeback effort from the Eagles (3-12, 1-8), who rallied back to make it a one-point game (63-62) with under three minutes to play.

Ian DuBose produced an all-around game in his return to the hardwood.  The graduate guard scored a team-high 17 points, secured five rebounds, dished out three assists and contributed one steal and one block in 28 minutes.

DuBose last played against Longwood on Nov. 27, when the Durham, N.C. native scored 14 points in Wake Forest's 71-60 win.

Wake Forest grabbed 52 rebounds in the victory, a season high and most since the 2015-16 squad pulled in 56 against UMBC.

Ody Oguama led the way on the glass for the Deacs, hauling in 10 boards (three offensive) en route to his second career double-double. The Raleigh, N.C. native also pitched in 13 points and went five-of-six from the free throw line.

Junior Isaiah Mucius also scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards.

How It Happened

  • Carter Whitt opened up scoring for the Deacs with a jumper two minutes into the contest.

  • A quick 7-0 run featuring two baskets from Ian DuBose and a triple from Isaiah Mucius put Wake Forest up 11-7 with 12:47 remaining.

  • Whitt banked in a jumper to give the Deacs an eight point lead (20-12) with 8:13 remaining.

  • After Boston College tied the score at 20, the Deacs entered the intermission with a 30-22 lead thanks to a 10-2 run to end the first period.

    • In his first game back from injury, DuBose led the Deacs in scoring at the half with eight points on four-of-eight shooting.

    • Ody Oguama grabbed eight of the Deacs 29 first-half rebounds.

  • Isaiah Mucius made his second 3-pointer of the night with 16:59 remaining in the second half to give the Deacs their first double-digit lead of the night (38-27).

  • DuBose's second triple of the night pushed the Wake Forest lead back to 11 (45-34) with 12:24 left in the game.

  • Ody Oguama ended a 10-0 Boston College run at the line, knocking down two free throws to push the lead back up to six (63-57) with 3:56 remaining.

  • After getting fouled on his 10th rebound, Oguama extended the lead to four (66-62) at the charity stripe with 1:04 left in the game.

    • The rebound gave the sophomore forward his second career double-double. His first collegiate double-double came at Boston College last season (Jan. 19, 2020).

  • Wake Forest would hold on to defeat the Eagles, 69-65.

Key Moment
After the Eagles cut a double-digit Wake Forest lead down to one with under three minutes left, Ody Oguama responded with a critical layup and two made free throws after getting fouled on a contested rebound. His late game contributions gave the Deacs a two-possession (66-62) lead, and effectively iced the game.

Stat of the Game

  • Wake Forest controlled a substantial advantage on the glass versus the Eagles. The Deacs pulled down 52 rebounds, their most since the 2015-16 season. Additionally, the team's 40 defensive rebounds are the fifth-most defensive rebounds in a game since 1986-87.

  • Ody Oguama secured his second career double-double in the victory. His first  (16 points, 10 rebounds) came against Boston College last season.

Straight From Forbes
"I'm proud of my team for going on the road and grinding out a win tonight. In the guts of the game of the second half, when the game was on the line, we extended the lead by getting stops and getting great looks on offense. Obviously it was great to have Ian DuBose back, he did exactly what we have been missing, which is gapping the defense, driving it to the basket, making plays and making plays for others. He really helped out a lot.

They jumped between a matchup zone and man defense. I thought when they went man we got a lot of wide open looks by setting great screens and coming hands back and getting the ball. We missed a couple wide open threes that could have made it 12 or 15, we didn't do it. Then we gave them a chance by not finishing the game in the right manner. We didn't get stops, we turned it over against their pressure, and we were having two guys guard the ball on defense in transition, not getting matched up, and that's just communication. Those things are poor and have to be cleaned up, and in February, defensive transition should not have to be cleaned up, it should be already done as much as we work on it. But it's something that I've got to continue to help them and coach them and get better at it.

I am very proud to come here and get a win. We got beat by 20 on the glass against Notre Dame, we went 52-34 on the glass tonight. At the beginning of the year I don't think I would have ever told you we would out rebound somebody like that, so that's a credit to our players for playing hard on the glass."

Up Next
Wake Forest will finish the road trip Saturday in Tallahassee for a matchup against No. 17 Florida State.

Tip-off against the Seminoles is set for 12 p.m. and the game will broadcast on ACC Network.
