
Record-Setting Day Puts Deacs at Top of Leaderboard

Four Deacs sit inside the top 25.
Kiawah Island, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team sits at the top of the leaderboard after almost 36 holes of play at the Kiawah Invitational, hosted by College of Charleston.
With inclement weather canceling the first round on Sunday, it was all going to be played today, making up for a 36-hole first day. At 5:52 the second round was paused due to darkness and will resume tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.
The long day of play did not slow down the Demon Deacons, who led the field for the entire day of play. Wake Forest came out firing, shooting a combined 14 birdies over the first nine holes of play.
Senior Eric Bae carded birdies on six straight holes to close out his first round and take the lead of the field as an individual. He also carded two birdies on his first nine. Senior Parker Gillam was right behind him, with five birdies on his first nine and four on his second to end the first round one stroke behind Bae, in second place.
Freshman Michael Brennan continued to impress, with seven birdies in his opening round and starting the afternoon round in a tie for third. Senior Marco Steyn was two strokes behind him in a tie for ninth.
The first round score of 21-under par 267 broke the program record for the lowest 18-hole team score in relation to par. The Deacs led the field by nine strokes at the end of the first round and currently lead by 10 heading into the final day of play tomorrow.
