WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team has been selected as the No. 1 seed at the Stanford NCAA Regional site, as announced on Golf Channel today.
Seventy-two teams and 24 individuals were selected to compete at one of four regional championships, each featuring 18 teams and six individuals, May 10-12. From regional competition, 24 teams and 12 individuals will advance to the national championships to be played May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Wake Forest is coming off a third-place finish at ACC Championships after falling to Florida State in the semifinals of match play. They won two team titles and two individual titles this season. The Deacs took home the team title and Rachel Kuehn took home the individual title at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in February and won the team title at the Big Four match play event in March. Freshman Mimi Rhodes took home the individual title at the Cavalier Match Play event earlier this month.
There will be three rounds of stroke play over three days at Regionals. The top six teams and the top three individuals of non-advancing teams from the Regional will advance to NCAA Championships in Scottsdale.
Other teams in the Stanford field include No. 2-seed Oklahoma State, No. 3-seed USC, four-seed Virginia Tech, five-seed Stanford, six-seed Arizona and the No. 7-seed Florida. Oklahoma State, Stanford and Virginia Tech are all ranked in the top-15 in the latest GolfStat rankings.
Coach's Comments
"We are very excited to continue postseason play at Stanford. We're confident in our game out there, it's a bit of a longer course and we have some really good ball-strikers on our team. It'll be a long trip, but we're excited to get out there and compete with some of the best teams in the country." - head coach Kim Lewellen
