Demon Deacons End Run at NCAA Championships
5/31/2021 9:55:00 PM | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Wake Forest men's golf team fell short of reaching match play at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Clemson senior Turk Pettit won the individual title.
After battling for three days of stroke play, Wake Forest made the first cut to 15 teams for the final round of stroke play on Monday. The top eight teams at the end of Monday advanced to the match play quarterfinals.
Paired with Pepperdine and North Carolina, the Deacs got out to a slow start and never found a rhythm. As a team, Wake Forest recorded five birdies on the day, with three of them coming on the second nine holes.
Freshman Michael Brennan recorded two birdies over his final six holes. Junior Alex Fitzpatrick recorded a birdie on his seventh hole of the day, hoping to get some momentum at the turn. Mark Power birdied the par-five fourth after making his turn.
After starting the day in a tie for the eighth spot, Wake Forest couldn't make up the difference and finished T13 with Clemson. Along with the Deacs and Tigers, Georgia Tech and Louisville also did not make match play. Florida State and North Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal match will take place Tuesday morning and the semifinal match will follow in the afternoon. The Championship match will be Wednesday afternoon and will air on the Golf Channel.
Coach's Comments
"This is obviously not how we expected to end the season. I think we're all in a bit of shock. Today was our worst round of the year, but we can learn a lot about ourselves as a team and how to prepare for next year from this experience. We're a top 15 team and that's great, but if we want to contend for a title, we need to do a lot better. We didn't handle ourselves very well this week.
We have a young team and almost everyone that was here this week will be back next year. So, we will be back and we will do better next year."
