WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest closed its preseason exhibition schedule with a 2-0 loss to the No. 17 South Carolina Gamecocks Thursday night at Spry Stadium.
The Deacs out-shot the Gamecocks by a 18-9 margin, but South Carolina was able to find the back of the net twice.
"It was a terrible start," head coach Tony da Luz said after the match. "We were so out of sorts in the back at the beginning of the game. I felt like the response there was good in the second period. In the third period, we held the ball well and created some really good chances. I like the way we finished strong and fit."
11 different Deacs put shots on the board, but South Carolina keeper Heather Hinz saved all 11 shots she faced to preserve the clean sheet.
Graduate student Jenna Menta led Wake Forest's offensive attack with three shots, including one on target. Malaika Meena and Sophie Faircloth followed that up with two shots apiece.
