WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Josh Howard is a former Wake Forest Basketball student athlete. Upon graduation from Wake Forest, Howard was selected with the 29th overall pick in the NBA draft. Today, Howard is the head basketball coach at the University of North Texas at Dallas, an NAIA school in Texas.
A Winston- Salem native, Howard went to high school just a short drive down the road in Kernersville. In high school, Howard averaged a double-double during his final two years at Glenn High School. Prior to enrolling at Wake Forest, he decided to spend a year at Hargrave Military Academy. During his time in Virginia, Howard averaged 19.9 points per game with 10.1 steals. His performances with Hargrave garnered him even more high level offers from around the country.
Howard inevitably chose Wake Forest over many other universities. During his freshman year, Howard began a storied career with the Demon Deacons. In his second year he was selected to the All-ACC Second Team. He was the second leading scorer for the Deacons in his third year, averaging 13.9 points per game. After receiving All-ACC Third Team honors his junior year, Howard decided to return to Wake Forest for his senior season. In his final year in black and gold, Howard was named ACC Player of the Year and helped lead Wake Forest to a regular season title. Howard was named National Player of the Year by FOX, College Insider, and Basketball Digest. He was also a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and the James Naismith Award. Howard graduated from Wake Forest with a bachelor's degree in sociology. In 2003, Wake Forest retired Howard's number five. His jersey will forever hang from the rafters of the LJVM Coliseum.
Following his four years with the Demon Deacons, Howard decided to declare for the NBA Draft. Howard was selected in the 2003 NBA Draft as the 29th overall pick to the Dallas Mavericks. In his first year in the pros, Howard earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors. Howard's best season with the Mavs came in 2007. During which, he averaged 18.9 points per game, helping to propel the Mavericks to a 67-15 record. In 2007, he was named as an NBA All Star for the first time. Howard would spend seven seasons in total in Dallas before being traded to the Washington Wizards. After a season in Washington, he moved on to the Utah Jazz, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Austin Toros. Howard retired in 2014 to begin a career in coaching.
In 2016, Howard was hired by Piedmont International University as the Head Coach of their Basketball team. After four years with the Bruins, he was hired by NAIA school, UNT at Dallas. Howard is still coaching with the Trailblazers as they begin their second season in the NAIA.
On today's pod, Howard joins alum Kevin Smith to talk about all things Wake Forest Athletics, overcoming adversity, getting into coaching, and more.
