LAST TIME OUT
Wake Forest extended its win streak to seven which ties for the third-longest in program history, taking a 5-0 victory over Coastal Carolina at Spry Stadium.
The Demon Deacons have yet to concede a goal this season as they hold a seven-game shutout streak, during which they have remained unbeaten. Dating back to last season, Wake Forest has gone 655 minutes without conceding a goal. It is the longest shutout streak in program history.
Wake Forest is one of four teams in the nation who have yet to allow a goal in the 2021 season.
Sophomore Sophie Faircloth got the scoring started with her second Olimpico goal of her career. She lined up the corner kick in the 3rd minute and perfectly curved the ball over the Coastal Carolina goalkeeper.
A little over a minute later, Sofia Rossi scored her third goal of the season with a one-time finish with the assist from senior Ryanne Brown.
Just beyond the half hour mark, senior Ashley Frank bagged her second goal of the season after graduate Jenna Menta laid the ball off for Frank who struck a rocket into the right-hand corner.
As the second half got underway, the Deacs offense continued where they left off as Carrie McIntire scored her first goal of the season at the 67th minute mark. Frank popped the ball over to Menta where she dished off to McIntire for the 4-0 advantage.
Menta capped off a career night for the Deacs when she netted her third goal of the season. Frank's perfect pass sent Menta through on to the score. The Somers, N.Y. native, led the team with four points on two assists and a goal.
SMART HOT START
Shayla Smart was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced. Smart now has six goals on the season to tie for the conference lead and rank among the nation's best.
The senior forward from Apopka, Florida earned the award after her hat-trick performance in Wake Forest's fifth consecutive shutout victory over Loyola-Maryland on Sept. 2. It was the first hat-trick earned by a Demon Deacon since Maddie Huster scored three against Florida International in 2016.
This is the first ACC Offensive Player of the Week nod for the Demon Deacons this season, and first since Bailey Feist on October 17, 2017.
NEW YEAR, NEW TEAM
The Deacs return 20 letterwinners from last year's squad, highlighted by Ryanne Brown, Giovanna DeMarco, Sofia Rossi and ACC All-Freshman Team member Sophie Faircloth.
Wake Forest welcomes a signing class of 16 that was rated No. 37 in the country and No. 7 in the ACC by TopDrawerSoccer.com. The Deacs added 15 true freshmen and one graduate transfer - Jenna Menta from Georgetown - that look to make an immediate impact this season.
