Wake Forest Tops Maryland to Remain Undefeated in Non-Conference

Demon Deacons is one of just three teams in the country that has not given up a goal this season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest got its eighth straight shutout victory on Sunday afternoon, taking a 2-0 victory over Maryland at Spry Stadium.

For the first time since 2016 and the fourth time in program history, Wake Forest (8-0-0) opened the season undefeated at 8-0-0.

The Demon Deacons have yet to concede a goal this season as they hold a eight-game shutout streak, during which they have remained unbeaten. Dating back to last season, Wake Forest has gone 745 minutes without conceding a goal. It is the longest active shutout streak in the nation and in program history.

Wake Forest is one of just three teams in the country that has not given up a goal this season. Minnesota and Tennessee are the other two. The Deacs have outscored their opponents 23-0.

The Deacs' first goal came from Lauren Tangney, who was being celebrated for on her senior day. She collected a deflected clearance and capitalized on the one-on-one against the Terps'(4-2-2)  keeper for her first collegiate goal.

Graduate student Jenna Menta recorded her fourth goal of the season off a Sophie Faircloth dish across the box. 11 different Deacs have scored at least one goal this season.

The Deacs' back line has tallied 720 scoreless minutes this season, limiting opposing teams to a combined 13 shots on goal and 19 corner kicks over the last eight games.

Kaitlyn Park's fifth shutout is tied for the most in the nation. At no surprise, Wake Forest's defense is tied for third for the best in the country in goals against average.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"I am so proud of these guys. We made history with eight-straight shutout victories for the start of the season, it is unbelievable. Today I thought we dominated the ball besides the few corners and counter-attacks. We created a few chances and I wish we could have put a few more away. It is good preparation for us as Maryland is a tough and athletic team who plays good soccer. Hopefully it helps us for a big one on Friday."
