Wake Forest’s sixth consecutive shutout sets a new program record.
BOONE, N.C. -- Wake Forest extended its win streak to six and set a program record for most consecutive shutouts on Sunday, taking a 2-0 victory at App State.
The Deacs (6-0-0) have yet to concede a goal this season as they hold a six-game shutout streak, during which they have remained unbeaten. Dating back to last season, Wake Forest has gone 565 minutes without conceding a goal. It is the longest shutout streak in program history.
Malaika Meena initiated the scoring in the 9th minute as she received a perfect ball from Sofia Rossi who played it into the box. Meena capitalized by getting her foot on the ball for the early goal.
Up 1-0, Rossi collected her second assist of the night after she flicked a ball into the box. Senior Shayla Smart dished a pass that narrowly slid past the App State keeper and right into the foot of Menta. The graduate student punched it in to put the Deacs up 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Deacs defense only allowed three shots off as the offense fired 28 shots, placing 22 on goal. The Deacs earned 11 corners in the bottom half of the match, combining for 16 total.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Parks picked up her fourth shutout of the season after she gathered two saves on four shots faced.
For App State, goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston logged 20 saves on the day.
Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"I'm proud of the shutout," head coach Tony da Luz said after the win. "Six shutouts speaks for itself with how we defend, press and reduce the number of opportunities our opponents are getting. They did get some corners and set pieces that we had to defend. We weren't efficient in finishing and missed some unbelievable opportunities. The App State goalkeeper had some unbelievable saves tonight but then again, we hit a few right at her tonight. On the road up here in the mountains is tough but three points is three points."
