The redshirt sophomore has overcome numerous challenges to become one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in ACC history.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman has been named a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year, as announced on Wednesday.
The award is presented annually to the Division I college football player who has demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
The award honors the type of exemplary character and commitment to community, family and teammates demonstrated by Jason Witten, the 2012 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year and one of the most prominent role models in the game.
Hartman is one of 20 semifinalists for the award with the winner being selected in February.
Hartman, who was one of eight returning semifinalists for the Maxwell Award from a year ago and one of five returning finalists for the Manning Award, entered the 2022 season with the opportunity to rewrite the Wake Forest and Atlantic Coast Conference record books.
He has helped lead the Demon Deacons their program-record seventh-straight bowl berth and he has overcome many challenges in his life to achieve the great things he has done on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He is a three-time team captain for the Wake Forest football team.
Overall this season entering Week 12, Hartman has completed 191-of-307 passes for 2,743 yards and 28 touchdowns. Hartman has accounted for a touchdown in 31-straight games, which is the longest active streak in the country.
This marked Hartman's 31st-straight game with a touchdown, the longest active streak in the nation. For his career, Hartman broke the Wake Forest all-time passing mark against Liberty, eclipsing Riley Skinner (2006-09) with a five-yard pass to Ke'Shawn Williams in the third quarter. He became the 41st player in NCAA history and just the third passer in the history of the ACC to eclipse the 12,000-yard passing barrier for his career. The Charlotte, N.C. product already holds the program record for touchdown passes and ranks second in ACC history in this category with 100 for his career, just seven off the record held by former Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd (107).
This season, which was to begin with such anticipation and hope after he broke through in 2021 to become one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the country, suddenly was in doubt. The Charlotte, N.C. native has been spectacular this fall as he has led the Demon Deacons to their program record seventh-straight bowl game.
A communication major, Hartman was a member of the 2021 ACC All-Academic Team. Off the field and outside of the classroom, Hartman has participated in a myriad of different service commitments in his time at Wake Forest. Some of these community service acts include Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R), Freedom School, Juneteenth Annual Kickball Tournament, Wake Forest Victory Day, Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston Salem among others.
