
Seven From Wake Forest Men’s Soccer Earn ACC Honors

Five upperclassmen and two freshmen were selected to the 2022 All-ACC teams.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Seven from Wake Forest men's soccer were selected for 2022 ACC honors, the league office announced on Wednesday. Junior Garrison Tubbs and sophomore Roald Mitchell were named All-ACC second-team selections, juniors Prince Amponsah and Jahlane Forbes along with sophomore Babacar Niang were named All-ACC third-team selections and Cooper Flax and Vlad Walent were named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
With the five selections this year, Wake Forest has earned 54 All-ACC selections under head coach Bobby Muuss.
Additionally, the Demon Deacons have had 10 All-Freshman Team selections under Muuss and this marks the first time since 2017 that Wake Forest had multiple players selected to the All-Freshman team when Omir Fernandez and Brandon Servania were picked for the honor.
"As a program, we know that no individual award is earned without the entire team's success, hard work, buy-in to the program culture and all fulfilling our roles," Muuss said. "I am very happy for the guys that were honored, but incredibly proud of the group for the way they have competed all year and have been so resilient."
Garrison Tubbs
Selected as a team captain prior to the start of the season, Tubbs has started all 18 matches for Wake Forest to lead the Deacs to eight clean sheets while conceding less than one goal per match. Additionally, Wake Forest did not allow a shot on goal in victories over UAB, Jacksonville and NC State.
He was named ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13, the first weekly conference honor in his career.
Offensively, Tubbs has scored two game-winning goals this year against George Mason and Wofford while also picking up assists against Fairleigh Dickinson and Boston College.
Tubbs was also selected as an ACC All-Freshman Team selection during the 2020-21 season.
Roald Mitchell
Starting all 18 of his appearances so far this season, Mitchell currently leads Wake Forest in goals (seven), points (18) and shots (48) as the centerpiece of a Demon Deacon attack that is averaging 2.33 goals per game this season.
From Sept. 6-13 the Montclair, N.J., native scored six of his seven goals on the season including a hat trick against Winthrop and a game-winning penalty kick against NC State.
He was named ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13, the first weekly conference honor in his career.
Mitchell has also recorded four assists including the helper on the first goal of a 3-0 victory over Louisville on Oct. 28. He later struck against the Cardinals for his seventh goal of the campaign.
Jahlane Forbes
Returning to the backline in 2022, Forbes has been active all over the pitch for the Demon Deacons this fall.
Starting all 18 matches so far this season, Forbes has helped lead Wake Forest to eight clean sheets while also collecting a team-high six assists. He also scored a goal in the Deacs' 6-1 victory over George Mason on Sept. 20.
Wake Forest is 5-0-0 this year when Forbes has logged a goal contribution.
Prince Amponsah
Starting all 17 of his appearances this fall, Amponsah has guided Wake Forest to top-20 national rankings in goals against average (0.833) and goal differential (+27). The Deacs' eight clean sheets have all come when he's on the field.
He was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13, the first weekly conference honor in his career.
Babacar Niang
In the lineup full-time this fall, Niang has appeared in 16 matches with 11 starts to register four goals and two assists while being a versatile contributor in the attacking third.
In his season debut against UAB on Sept. 3, Niang recorded a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory.
He also recorded back-to-back goals against Clemson and Duke before also notching the game-winning strike against Louisville in a 3-0 decision on Oct. 28.
Cooper Flax
Starting 11 of his 13 appearances in his debut season for Wake Forest, Flax ranks tied for second on the team in assists (five) while also scoring the game-winning goal against Fairleigh Dickinson in a 3-2 decision on Sept. 13.
Wake Forest is 6-0-0 when he's recorded a goal contribution this season.
Vlad Walent
Appearing in 18 matches with 12 starts – including the first seven of his collegiate career – Walent has earned 10 points from three goals and four assists this season.
Walent scored the first of two Demon Deacon goals in a 2-1 win over Air Force on Aug. 28 and has also registered goals against Clemson and Boston College.
The Demon Deacons are 7-0-0 when he's recorded a goal contribution this season.
