NIT Bracket
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's basketball team was selected to the National Invitational Tournament, as announced by the selection committee Sunday evening, facing Towson.
The Demon Deacons will host the Tigers on Wednesday, March 16 with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+. This marks the first time that the Demon Deacons will face Towson in men's basketball.
This marks the first time the Demon Deacons will make a postseason appearance since 2017. It is also the first postseason appearance in the Steve Forbes era, with Forbes in his second season at the helm of the Deacs.
"Our players have given our staff and our fans everything we have asked of them and more this year," said head coach Steve Forbes. "They are a wonderful group of young men who have reinvigorated our fanbase by representing Wake Forest in an explementary manner, on and off the court. Our team is excited to have the opportunity to play in the NIT and we look forward to representing Wake Forest and the ACC in postseason play."
Wake Forest is the third-highest ranked ACC team in the NET Rankings and won a program-tying 13 league games this season. The Deacs boast the ACC Coach and Player of the Year in Steve Forbes and Alondes Williams along with All-ACC Second Team selection Jake LaRavia.
At the conclusion of the Deacs' run in the ACC Tournament last week, Alondes Williams continues to be the only player in the history of the ACC to lead in both points (19.22) and assists (5.22) per game. He is also fourth in field goal percentage (51.6) behind LaRavia, who is in second (56.8).
With a regular-season conference record of 13-7 and just three league wins last season, the Deacs had the largest year-to-year improvement ever in ACC win totals with 10. The Deacs surpassed the 2009-10 UNC team who had 9. Additionally, Wake Forest's nine conference victories by 15 or more points this season lead the conference and are the most by an ACC team since Virginia also won nine ACC contests by at least 15 points in 2018-19.
With a 17-win differential from last year to this year, Wake Forest is on pace to have one of the largest improvements from year to year in NCAA history this season, which is currently officially held by Towson. Iowa State closed in on the record with their win against Kansas State for an 18-game improvement (2-22 to 20-9). Towson broke their own record this season with a 20-game improvement (4-14 to 24-7). The Deacs 17-game improvement from last season (6-16 to 23-8) ties Towson's 17-game improvement from 2012 to 2013 (1-31 to 18-13).
