BOSTON, Mass. - Wake Forest men's basketball head coach Steve Forbes has been named a finalist for the 2022 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award, announced by the organization Tuesday.
Earlier this month, Coach Forbes was named the ACC Coach of the Year , AP ACC Coach of the Year and a semifinalist for the Werner Ladder Naismith Trophy Men's Coach of the Year award. Wake Forest is coming off a second round win in the National Invitation Tournament and will appear in the NIT Quarterfinals for the first time since 2000 Wednesday night at Texas A&M.
History Made in Winston-Salem
With a regular-season conference record of 13-7, Wake Forest tied the single-season program record for ACC wins with 13 (2004-05, 2002-03). With just three league wins last season, the Deacs had the largest year-to-year improvement ever in ACC win totals with 10. The Deacs surpassed the 2009-10 UNC team who had 9. Additionally, Wake Forest's nine conference victories by 15 or more points this season lead the conference and are the most by an ACC team since Virginia also won nine ACC contests by at least 15 points in 2018-19.
With a 19-win differential from last year to this year, Wake Forest is on pace to have one of the largest improvements from year to year in NCAA history this season, which is currently officially held by Towson. Wake Forest also broke the program for most home wins in a season last week against Towson and VCU in the first and second rounds of the NIT for 18 home wins this season. A victory over Texas A&M Wednesday night would provide Wake Forest with its fourth 26-win season in program history, and first 26-win season since 2004-05 (27-6).
