WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After a few years of working his way up the depth chart, John Leach became a weapon in the Wake Forest football team's backfield from 1990-1993. During his four years with the Demon Deacons, Leach not only left his mark on the Wake Forest football, team but on the ACC as well.
Before coming to Wake Forest, Leach was a three sport athlete at Garner High School in North Carolina, excelling in football, track and field, and wrestling.
In 1990, Leach began his career at Wake Forest. During his freshman year with the Deacs, Leach recorded 79 rushing yards on 27 attempts. During his sophomore campaign in 1991, Leach began to see his production improve. He ended the season with 503 yards and two touchdowns on 104 carries.
Leach continued to improve during his junior season, registering 691 yards and seven touchdowns on 149 carries while sharing the backfield during the 1992 season.
Entering his final season in 1993, Leach began to be recognized for his accomplishments. He was a Doak Walker Award Pre-season nominee and entered the season with high expectations. Leach's performance during the 1993 season didn't disappoint. He set a conference record at the time with 329 rushing yards in the season finale versus Maryland and finished his senior year at Wake Forest as the ACC's leading rusher with 1,089 total yards and 10 touchdowns.
Leach left his mark while at Wake Forest, he was Selected to the All-ACC Second Team in 1993 as well as being named Wake Forest's Most Valuable Player on the 1993 squad.
