Gillam leads all Demon Deacons as he will be in search of his highest finish of the season during the final round of the Valspar Collegiate on Tuesday.
PALM CITY, Fla. -- After 36 holes of play at the Valspar Collegiate, the No. 20 Wake Forest men's golf team sits ahead of three top-25 teams in Palm City, Fla.
The nationally-ranked Demon Deacons sit ahead of No. 5 Texas Tech, No. 17 Texas A&M and No. 21 Clemson. The Deacs were under par in both rounds of the tournament and sit at 7-under-par with a two-round score of 561.
Senior Parker Gillam led the charge for Wake Forest on Monday, carding an open round score of 65 (-6) and was within the top five on the individual leaderboard. With the help of four birdies to end the day, Gillam sits in a tie for 11th heading into the final round and is the low Demon Deacon on the leaderboard.
Sophomore Michael Brennan and freshman Scotty Kennon also sit below par after the opening two rounds. They both are tied for 28th at 1-under-par and Brennan was par or better in each round.
Both Brennan and Kennon were below par in the second round. Additionally, Mark Power was also under par in the second round, helping the Deacs move up one spot as a team.
The Demon Deacons will tee off their final round on Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m. as a part of a shotgun start, as Wake Forest will play alongside Florida State and Ohio State between holes No. 4 to No. 7.
From Coach Haas:
"We didn't play the par fives very well today and normally that's our strength. With a good round tomorrow, we can pass a bunch more teams. We have to continue to improve our thought process on the course. We are a very talented group, but we had way too many mental errors which they realize and will make those improvements as we move forward. They battled today and that's a good sign of things to come." - Head Coach Jerry Haas
