No. 15 Demon Deacons in Position at ACC Championship

Heading into the final round of stroke play the Wake Forest men’s golf team is just two strokes out of a match play position.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- With 18 holes remaining in stroke play, the No. 15 Wake Forest men's golf team sits in contention to advance to match play at the ACC Championship.

The nationally-ranked Demon Deacons surged in the second round of the tournament on Friday to put them in the hunt for one of the four match play positions. Wake Forest is just two strokes back of Notre Dame and Florida State who are tied for fourth. The Deacs ended day one with a score of 567 (-9) and are tied with Louisville for sixth on the leaderboard.

The Deacs were helped by four par or better rounds in the second round with sophomore Michael Brennan leading the charge late in the day. After an opening round 71 (-1), Brennan got off to a quick start in the second round with a birdie on the opening hole.

He got on a roll at the turn, carding three consecutive birdies to push his round to 3-under-par. A birdie on the par-4 eighth capped off the best round of the day by a Demon Deacon at 68 (-4). It helped put Brennan inside of the top 10 as he rose 11 spots on the leaderboard in the second round.

Junior Mark Power joined Brennan inside of the top 20 at the Kilkenny, Ireland native was consistent throughout the day for the Demon Deacons, carding a pair of under par rounds. In the second round, Power recorded two eagles including one of the par-4 18th right before hitting the turn.

He is the only player in the 60-person field to have multiple eagles at the ACC Championship.

Senior Alex Fitzpatrick was the third Demon Deacon to be par or better in each of his rounds on Friday. He enters the final round of stroke play tied for 28th at 1-under-par.

For the final round of stroke play, the Demon Deacons will tee off Saturday with Clemson (-7) and NC State (-7), with the first tee time set for 9 a.m. off No. 10.
