The Demon Deacons were led by sophomore Clay Stirsman and are in third after 18 holes of play in Naples, Fla.

NAPLES, Fla. -- After the opening round of the Calusa Cup Sunday afternoon, the No. 17 Wake Forest men's golf team sits in third and in contention with two rounds of competition remaining.

The nationally-ranked Demon Deacons are ahead of a pair of top-10 teams including No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 8 Georgia while also sitting ahead of No. 22 Clemson and No. 23 Purdue. In the first round, the Deacs were one of just four teams to shoot an under-par round.

Wake Forest shot 285 (-3) on Sunday with the help of three under-par rounds in the lineup.

In his first career round in the Demon Deacon lineup, sophomore Clay Stirsman put on a show on the back nine. He entered the final nine holes of the round at 1-over-par. The Carmel, Ind. native carded four birdies over the last nine holes without a bogey to finish with a 69 (-3).

He led all Deacs in the first round and sits tied for fifth and just three strokes off the individual lead.

Fellow sophomore Michael Brennan also had a strong finish to his round with birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to turn in an opening round score of 70 (-2). Brennan also sits inside of the top 10 on the individual leaderboard as he is tied for ninth.

One stroke back of Brennan is junior Mark Power. The Kilkenny, Ireland native shot a first round score of 71 (-1) and is tied for 14th. Power was at one point during his round tied for the lead and was 3-under-par on two different occasions.

The Demon Deacons will tee off their second round on Monday starting at 1:30 p.m., as Wake Forest will play alongside Florida and Georgia Tech.

From Coach Haas:

"It was a big improvement over last year's performance. We made a ton of birdies, which is a good sign as we move on towards the Conference, Regional and NCAA Championships. It is a tricky golf course and a couple of holes gave us problems, but with a few adjustments look for another good day tomorrow from the Demon Deacons." - Head Coach Jerry Haas
