Ellison Tabbed to Doak Walker Award Watch List

This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Demon Deacons have had a different running back named to the watch list.

DALLAS, Texas – For the third consecutive day, Wake Forest had a student-athlete honored on a national player of the year watch list. Sophomore running back Justice Ellison was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, as announced by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum on Wednesday morning.

This marks the fifth consecutive year a Demon Deacon has been named to the preseason list for the annual award given to the nation's top running back (Christian Beal-Smith - 2021, Kenneth Walker III- 2020, Cade Carney-2019, and Matt Colburn II-2018). 

This comes on the heels of Sam Hartman and A.T. Perry being named to the Maxwell Award Watch List on Monday while Hartman was also named a Davey O'Brien Award Watch List member on Tuesday morning.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. 

Off and Running

Ellison finished the season with a career-best 541 rushing yards, ranking second on the team while also having seven rushing touchdowns in 11 games played. The leading returning rusher for the Demon Deacons set a new career highs with 18 rushing attempts, two rushing touchdowns, and one receiving touchdown against NC State (Nov. 13), helping Wake Forest clinch a perfect 6-0 record in home games.

He ran for a career-high 86 yards against Virginia which included his longest career run of 63 yard. Also, a 46-yard rushing touchdown against Army clinched the Deacs victory and moved Wake Forest to 7-0 to start the season. Ellison earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors after a win over Louisville with 15 rushes for 67 yards and a touchdown.
