Wake Forest Shuts Out Milwaukee in Season Opener

8/18/2022 10:05:00 PM | Women's Soccer

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team defeated the Milwaukee Panthers, 2-0, in their opening game of the 2022 season at Spry Stadium.

Freshman Hannah Johnson and Sophomore Emily Morris scored their first career goals early in the first and second halves respectively. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks was tested just twice tonight in her 30th career appearance but took care of business on both occasions to earn her 14th career clean sheet. Morris led the Deacs with five shots, four of which were on goal.
Sophomore Malaika Meena, Johnson and freshman Caiya Hanks each tallied four shots.

It took Johnson almost no time to adjust to the collegiate level, bagging her first career goal just four minutes into the game. Liv Stowell, who made her first career start, created the goal by whipping in a cross with her right foot after being played through by sophomore Tyla Ochoa down the right side. Sophie Faircloth came close to doubling the lead in the 34th minute as she struck the right woodwork. The Demon Deacons controlled 75 percent of the possession in the first half. The shots in the first half went 11-3 (6-1 on goal) in favor of the home team.

Morris' hard work in the midfield paid off in the 54th minute, as she collected her first career goal, courtesy of a Caiya Hanks assist, to extend the lead. Morris, along with Meena and defender Kristin Johnson, played the full 90 minutes and helped see out the 2-0 victory.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"It was our first home game, and everyone was super excited. They might have been a little nervous to start the game but once we got into a rhythm, we really used every inch of the field. We had a lot of variety in how we built, how we attacked and how we put pressure on them defensively. We had a couple good goals there as well.

From the first exhibition against Richmond to the second at JMU to tonight, we have improved every time we come out on the field so I'm really happy with their efforts and the subs did a good job coming off the bench. This helps us a lot for Sunday's game against Rhode Island." - head coach Tony Da Luz.
