
Week 1 Open the Gate Honoree: Dr. Caryl Guth

Wake Forest graduate Dr. Caryl Guth is slated to be the Open the Gate honoree for Wake Forest’s Week 1 matchup with VMI.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Dr. Caryl Guth helped establish the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2003. Before that, the dedicated anesthesiologist worked in the Mills-Peninsula Hospital System in California for over 30 years. She will be leading the Demon Deacons out onto the field for the opening game of the season against VMI.
Dr. Guth earned her bachelor's degree from Wake Forest in 1957 and her M.D. in 1962 before getting an internship with the University of Kansas Medical Center. She went on to earn a certification as a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology. The Peoria, Ill. native was also an instructor at Radboud University in 1966 and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in 1965.
The Wake Forest graduate has been a major part of the University and its athletics programs over the years. She is a current member of the Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association, serving as president from 2005 to 2006. She was a recipient of the Loyal Deacon Award in 2018 and Deacon Club Member of the Year Award in 2010. Dr. Guth also provides scholarships to the women's golf and basketball programs.
Earlier in the day on Thursday, Sept. 1., the new on-campus Dr. Caryl Guth Women's Basketball Clubhouse will be dedicated in her honor.
Today, she serves on the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame selection committee.

The Open the Gate tradition has been an important and unique aspect of football games since its inception in 2008. This allows Wake Forest to honor individuals that make its University and Winston-Salem community so special. Honorees ride on the back of the motorcycle with the Demon Deacon mascot and lead the football team onto Truist Field. The first ever honoree was Wake Forest and Winston-Salem legend, Chris Paul.
