No. 24 Wake Forest concludes non-conference play undefeated for the second consecutive season.
BALTIMORE, Md. – The 24th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team (6-0-2) battled to a scoreless tie with Loyola Maryland (3-3-2) Sunday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex to conclude non-conference play.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks and the Demon Deacon back line registered its sixth clean sheet of the season to remain undefeated heading into Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play.
Neither side came up with significant scoring opportunities in the early going as the two teams combined for only two shots on goal in the opening frame. After battling to a 0-0 ledger under a constant downpour of rain in the first half, both teams began to apply pressure offensively in the second half.
Parks had the biggest save of the match in the 55th minute when Baylee DeSmit of Loyola Maryland took possession of the ball off a mishandled touch from Wake Forest. DeSmit then broke free down the middle of the pitch and ended up with a one-on-one opportunity with Parks, but the 2021 United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American laid out for a spectacular save to preserve the shutout.
Over the ensuing 35 minutes, both teams continued to attack in hopes of finding the game-winner but neither side was successful.
Wake Forest will conclude its five-game road swing Sunday when the Demon Deacons travel to face NC State. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Demon Deacon Details of Note
Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"Give Loyola credit, they were tough to break down and created some good chances. We were not sharp from the first whistle. We lacked the patience and discipline necessary to break them down. We pushed hard down the stretch but ran out of time. KP [Kaitlyn Parks] made an incredible save to preserve the tie. We had a solid non-conference season - we're still undefeated and have recorded six shutouts. I believe we can still improve and we will. Looking forward to this next phase of the season (ACC play)."
