Wake Forest Returns to Spry Stadium to Face Winthrop Tuesday Night

The Demon Deacons and Eagles will share the field for the first time in 11 seasons in Tuesday's tilt.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Starting the season 3-0-0 off the heels of a clean sheet at UAB, No. 5 Wake Forest men's soccer on Tuesday will return to Spry Stadium to host Winthrop.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

2022 Wake Forest soccer season tickets are on-sale now giving fans the opportunity to witness The Best Fan Experience In North Carolina from a number of unique seating options. Season tickets start as low as $45 and offer as much as a $220 savings off of purchasing individual single game tickets. 

New to the ticketing menu this year are five and 10 game FLEX options, giving fans maximum flexibility when choosing which home games to attend. FLEX season ticket members will simply open their digital FLEX account, and add or remove games as they decide which dates they are available to attend. Members may even use multiple admissions for a single game to bring a friend, family member or guest with them. If more FLEX tickets are needed, additional admissions may be purchased through the Wake Forest Ticket Office. FLEX admissions are able to be used for redemption at both men's and women's soccer games.

The Matchup 

  • Wake Forest will face Winthrop for the third in program history and for the first time in the Bobby Muuss era. 

  • The Demon Deacons are 2-0-0 all-time against the Eagles with the most recent showdown coming on Sept. 25, 2011. 

  • Wake Forest enters the contest with a 3-0-0 record, most recently defeating UAB on Saturday night by a final score of 2-0 at PNC Field.

  • During the opening weekend of play for the 2022 season, Wake Forest won against UCF 1-0 before knocking off Air Force 2-1. Both matches took place at Spry Stadium, where the Deacs are currently undefeated in their last nine appearances. 

  • Winthrop, meanwhile, will enter Spry seeking its first victory of the season after falling to Mercer and Georgia State to begin the season. 

Last Time Out

  • In their first appearance away from Spry this season, the Demon Deacons took down the UAB Blazers 2-0 on Saturday night. 

  • The Deacs dominated the first half but were unable to score before the halftime break. However, Wake Forest secured the two-goal advantage with goals from sophomore Leo Guarino in the 68th minute and sophomore Baba Niang in the 75th minute. 

  • Niang – who was making his season debut – also recorded his first-career assist for Guarino's goal. It also marked a new career-high for points (three) in a game for the Dakar, Senegal, native. 

  • Despite facing five shots, Wake Forest's stout defense did not allow a single shot on goal. 

  • In total, 19 Demon Deacons contributed for Wake Forest's third victory of the season. 

Early Polling

  • The Demon Deacons are currently ranked in the top-five in two different polls: No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 4 in TopDrawerSoccer's latest installment. 

  • Wake Forest is one of seven ACC schools ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll, joined by No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Pitt, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 17 Duke and No. 22 Notre Dame. 

  • Checking in at No. 4 in the latest TopDrawerSoccer rankings that were released Monday, Wake Forest is one of four ACC schools ranked in the top-five, with Clemson (No. 1), Duke No. 3) and Pitt (No. 5) being the others. 

Scouting the Eagles

  • Entering its third match of the season, Winthrop is coming off losses to 2021 SoCon Tournament champions Mercer (5-2) and 2021 NCAA Tournament participant Georgia State (5-1). 

  • Nick Guido and Aiden Williams have scored for the Eagles while Sam Bell has played every minute in goal for Winthrop so far, collecting 11 saves. 

  • This is the third of six-straight road matches to open the season for Winthrop, as the Eagles will also face South Carolina, Charlotte and UNC Greensboro before making their home debut on Sept. 20 against Furman. 

Looking Ahead

  • Wake Forest will begin ACC play on Saturday night, hosting Big Four foe NC State at Spry Stadium. 

  • Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
