GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer junior Prince Amponsah has been named ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. Playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory over UAB, Amponsah led a strong defensive effort as the Demon Deacons held the Blazers without a shot on goal.
This is the first career ACC Player of the Week honor for Amponsah. Additionally, the Bronx, N.Y., native's selection is the 14th ACC Defensive Player of the Week under head coach Bobby Muuss.
Entering last Saturday night's match against UAB, the Blazers had recorded back-to-back shutout victories to open the season. However, UAB was unable to get a shot off on goal as Wake Forest recorded the 2-0 win in the team's first road match of the season.
Through three matches, Amponsah has played all 270 minutes for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest has only conceded one goal during that span as Amponsah also added an assist in the team's 2-1 victory over Air Force on Aug. 28.
Wake Forest hosts two matches at Spry Stadium this week, first against Winthrop on Tuesday night before facing NC State in the ACC opener on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
