The Demon Deacons men’s basketball program will host a charity exhibition game on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum against the University of Alabama. All proceeds from this game will support stroke research at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest will open the 2023-24 men's basketball season by hosting the University of Alabama for a charity exhibition game inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. In addition to this being an opportunity for Deacon Nation and the entire Winston-Salem and Triad Community to get a sneak peek at the Demon Deacons men's hoops squad ahead of their season, all proceeds from this game will support stroke research at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Admission to the game will be free, with a suggested voluntary donation of $20 accepted at entry into Joel Coliseum. Additionally, there is an online donation form available now for donations to stroke research.
"Our players and staff are excited to open the season with this exhibition game against a nationally-ranked Alabama squad and support a great organization like the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center," head coach Steve Forbes said. "As everyone in our community knows, my wife Johnetta is on the long, hard road to recovery after she suffered a stroke a couple of months ago. I am so grateful to my children, family, friends and the entire Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community for their outpouring of support since her medical event. Additionally, I want to thank my players and staff for their understanding and support as I have been back-and-forth in Atlanta for the past six weeks before we were able to bring Johnetta home just over a week ago. We are excited for our community to see our players perform and to drive awareness and help support stroke research for this incredible organization and partner."
"We are excited and honored to partner with Wake Forest for this meaningful event," Alabama head coach Nate Oats said. "To be able to play an exhibition game and help people in need is a great opportunity that goes beyond basketball. At the same time, it will also give us an opportunity to test ourselves against a quality program in Wake Forest."
"We appreciate the opportunity to raise awareness for our Comprehensive Stroke Center - the highest-level designation possible by the Joint Commission. Many thanks to Steve and Johnetta Forbes and the entire Wake Forest community for providing us this platform to share our story and the compelling research that is improving outcomes for stroke patients everywhere," said Lisa Marshall, Chief Philanthropy Officer and Vice President at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
"On behalf of everyone at Wake Forest Athletics, we are so grateful that Johnetta Forbes is back in Winston-Salem and her attitude and perseverance on her long road to recovery have truly been inspiring to us all," director of athletics John Currie said. "We are proud to highlight our great partners at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and their team in the Comprehensive Stroke Center for research. While the exhibition game will provide much excitement and fun for our community to come together on Sunday, Oct. 29 to watch our Demon Deacons compete against a talented Alabama squad, this exhibition game truly personifies the Pro Humanitate motto of Wake Forest University."
More information will be shared in the coming weeks leading up to the contest on GoDeacs.com and social media.
